Threads: What We Can Learn From Their Launch

It's all anyone is talking about right now so I wanted to share my thoughts on the platform, if you should even consider joining, and what we can learn from their launch.

So first things first, I actually think Threads is going to have more staying power than other new social media apps like Clubhouse and/or LEMON8 and that's because of 2 things:

  1. It's an extremely familiar interface so there is little to no learning curve.

  2. People are dying for a platform where they don't have to jump through hoops to create content or get their content seen.

Not to mention, they made the signup process incredibly easy by allowing you to pull over your profile from Instagram AND connect with people you’re already following over there.

This means people get a jumpstart with their follower count and to be honest, I think this is a big reason other platforms don’t survive. It’s too difficult to quickly grow an audience and/or get your content seen and when we live in a world of instant gratification, this is key to a platform’s survival… And Meta knows this.

So should you join Threads?

My answer to this is the same as it is for every other marketing avenue -- It depends.

It depends on 2 things:

  1. Is your target market jumping on Threads? If no, then there's no point in joining unless it's just a fun platform you to be on personally.

  2. Is this a platform you want to actually spend time on? If your target market is on the app but you hate showing up there, your content is probably going to fall flat and be ineffective.

So before you feel like you have to jump into Threads, ask yourself these 2 questions to see if it's even worth your time and energy.

What We Can Learn From The Threads Launch

Ok now let's talk about my favorite part of what I've noticed about Threads and it's their strategy and launch.

Yes, Meta is a GIANT company compared to the rest of us but we can still take a page out of their playbook.

They have shown what happens when you keep your ear to the ground when it comes to both your competitors and what your market wants.

When you do this, you can quickly identify gaps in the market so you can jump in to fill that gap.

I truly believe that Meta has been working on Threads for a while because they could see that Twitter under Elon Musk has been floundering... and they’ve been sitting on it’s release until Twitter messes up again so they could release Threads and capitalize on everyone's anger and frustration.

There is absolutely no way that it's a coincidence that Twitter announced they're putting limits on the number of tweets users can see each day and then boom Meta launches Threads.

They had the platform developed and had an entire launch strategy ready to deploy the second they saw their opportunity.

All that to say, if you're not keeping a pulse on your competitors and/or what your audience is craving, it's time to start.

Neither of these should be a one time analysis to develop your initial strategy. They're ongoing efforts designed to help you identify areas of growth and opportunity.

So whether you decide to join Threads or not, make sure you have a pulse on what's happening in your industry and market. This is critical for your business's growth.

PS Anyone sharing their thoughts on strategy and how to best use Threads right now is full of it. None of us know exactly what this is going to be yet so there's no way to identify the best practices or strategies yet. Just have fun, experiment, and see what works best for you.
